province in the
Lombardy region of
Italy. Its capital is the city of
Sondrio.
It has an area of 3,212 km², and a total population of 176,856 (2001). There are 78
communes in the province, ranging in population from Sondrio (21,790 persons) to
Pedesina (only 34 inhabitants) and in size from
Valdidentro (244.41 km²) to

Switzerland (precisely, the
Canton of Grisons) to the north and west, the provinces of
Como and
Lecco to the west, the provinces of
